About Me:
I live in Shropshire with my wife, 4 children and 3 cats. I manage teams of engineers at Google by day and interested in technology. I love cycling both on and off road and generally being outside. I also like a good chill on the sofa watching a film with the family.

My Work:
I manage engineering teams in Google Cloud that help our customers solve business problems and innovate with technology. Part of my work includes projects that use AI with ancient languages and autonomous flight.

I’ve been coding for about 20 years, and always interested in technology, and working at Google allows me to keep learning everyday. Whilst now I manage teams, mentor and coach fellow Googlers, I also like to make sure I have a few extra projects active that allow me to keep hands on.
Over the last few years I’ve been lucky to be working with AI to solve interesting projects. Some of my previous projects I’ve helped bring the public are:
- Fabricius is a project from Google Arts and Culture that explores how Machine Learning can help researchers understand Egyptian Hieroglyphs and language.
- Ithaca is a project from Google Deepmind using AI to restore Ancient Greek texts
- AI Drone Derby is my current project using AI and cheap drones to teach people how to use machine learning in a practical physical way

My Typical Day:
I am lucky in that I can work from home or the office. My office is in Manchester, but most of Google is in London. I often travel to London for a couple of days each week. I generally work between 8am and 5.30pm and try to take an hour for lunch.

If I am at home, I get up at least by 6.30 (earlier in the summer) and help get all the children fed and ready for school. I’ll be at my computer by about 8am. I’ll have a break for lunch, where I usually try and go for a run or do some cycle training. Then I’ll be back at the computer until about 5.30pm.
If I need to go to London, I get up at 3.30am and start the drive down to London before the traffic gets too bad. I’ll arrive in London at about 7.45am. I will have breakfast at the office at 8am, then back at my desk by 8.30. I generally have a lot of meetings. I will grab lunch at the Google office at about 12:30 and work until about 6pm or later.
When in London, I’ll put some time aside to work in our drone lab, where we can test out code and machine learning models we have built during the week.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d put it towards seeing if we can create an “AI Drone Kit” for schools.

Education:
I don’t have a simple CV of a “traditional” computer science career path – but it just goes to show that there is no set path, follow what feels right and interests you.
I went to Shrewsbury Sixth Form College for A levels studying Theatre Studies and Art – I did a lot of music outside of college. After college I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I did all sorts, from trying to tour with a band and make a few recordings, working on a farm, customer service in insurance, working in a shop and then for a Pension company. In 2000, I moved to London where I worked both in Customer Service and back office at an Investment Management Company. After a couple of years of doing that and music in my spare time, I decided now was the time to go to University.
I went to the SAE Institute to study Recording Arts BA (Middlesex University). This is where I found that I actually could do maths and physics. They came far more naturally than they did at secondary school.
During the course you had work experience. Where I worked in a recording studio in London. At the end of my work experience, I got offered a permanent position. However, that meant I would have to put my studies on hold. As opportunities in the music industry were near impossible to find, I went for it. My grades were high enough that I still got awarded a Diploma of Higher Education.
However, after about 9 months and some very long hours, I didn’t feel it was the right fit for what was quite low money. While at SAE one of my friends got me into programming and building websites. So I started my own business doing music and web production. I learned a lot from many mistakes, both technically and commercially. I did that for about 5 years, when as a family we wanted to move back to Shropshire.
I got a job at a Digital Agency, Psycle Interactive as a front and backend developer. I was with Psycle 8 years, and for half of that I was a Technical Director. We worked on projects for Google, YouTube, Getty Images and Armani building all kinds of websites, platforms and interactive installations.
It is during this time I worked with a lot of Googlers, and one of them referred me to join Google. After many interviews, in 2017 I became a Customer Engineer for Google Cloud which was a great fit as I had been using Google Cloud for a number of years.
In 2021 I became a manager and I now lead the customer engineering teams specialising in Telecommunications, Media and Entertainment.
