  AI is capable of doing many amazing things that humans can do, and sometimes even better. AI can help us discover new things, create new things, and solve big problems. AI can also make our lives easier, safer, and more fun.
  
  Some people think that AI might even be able to create its own ideas and inventions in the future, without human help.
  
  But no one knows for sure what the highest potential of AI is, because AI is still developing and improving every day.
  
  AI is very exciting, but it also needs to be used wisely and ethically, so that it can benefit everyone.

  This is a hard one, scientists and people have been historically very bad at predicting where new technologies will go.
  
  Quite simply I don’t know.
  
  My guess is that usage of AI, software and computer science will only grow and be incorporated into more of our life and work.
  
  Given the rapid improvement the AI field has seen it seems like it will keep on gaining new “abilities” every few years. (like the recent creative abilities with stable diffusion and large language models)
  
  However AI is definitely constrained by compute. In that you can only do so much with how powerful your computer is.
  If computers grow exponentially more powerful than I see the power of AI also growing exponentially too.
  
  That was a lot of words to say I don’t really know, it’s like asking what is humanity capable of.

  Hmmm, that’s a thinker! We were all blown away by ChatGPT when that came out, but eventually expectations were reigned in as we examined and tested it more thoroughly. This will keep happening in increments as new AI sytsems are developed and exposed to us all, in such a way that wow us and create more hype that artificial general intellignce (AGI) is just around the corner.
  
  What we need to do, especially as scientists, is remain critical and sceptical when these new discoveries are made. This will enable us to test and evaluate more effectively and thereby better understand each step in the AI journey.
  
  As to what AI is ultimately capable of. At this point, I honestly don’t know for sure. Does anyone? I can speculate and make predictions on what it might be able to do. But sadly, I haven’t really spent much time contemplating such a complex idea. Looks like I need to go on a really long walk in the countryside to let my mind wander.
  
  What I can do, is point you in the direction of some people who have speculated and theorised on this question:
  
  The first is Max Tegmark and his book Life 3.0. He describes possible AI futures really well in here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_3.0).
  
  Another is Ray Kurzweil, a proponent of Futurism who believes we will reach true AGI by 2045 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kurzweil).
  
  And thirdly, look up Stuart Russell, a British professor who has done a lot of research into AI, and his book Human Compatible (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Compatible).
