I work in an area of AI called “multi-agent systems” where we think a lot about how teams of computers, or mixtures of humans and computers, can work together. Communication is an important part of successfully achieving a collective goal, and my research is focused on trying to connect how an AI communicates with those goals.

My Typical Day:
I’m not very disciplined with a schedule so it can vary a lot! I typically work from home, so usually I get up (usually later than I would like!), get a coffee, and get started with things. Some days I head to the university to either teach, mentor, or attend meetings or seminars.
In the evenings I usually hang out with friends, either online with some games, or in-person for some dinner.
-
Education:
I did my GCSEs at the British School in Tokyo! I was a pretty average student, but I liked science and art a lot. I moved back to the UK when I was 16 to attend the Wellington Academy boarding school, and it was here that I began to get really interested in maths and computer science.

Qualifications:
I did my GCSEs at the British School in Tokyo, then did Maths/Further Maths, Physics, and Fine Art A-levels at Wellington Academy. I then studied my Computer Science undergrad at the University of Bristol.

My Interview

What did you want to be after you left school?
I didn't have a specific goal in mind. When I was younger I remember wanting to be an inventor, and I think that just turned into a desire to explore and tinker with things.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Yes a couple times!
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I was very drawn to computer animation when I was a teenager, so probably that!
What's your favourite food?
Ramen!
