It was during my master’s degree. I developed app to help people with lifestyle diseases to create recipes from their grocery bills by uploading a scanned bill. I wanted to use AI for good. This motivated me to do a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction.

I read an article about something called a support vector machine back in the late 2000s. It was the first time I’d come across the term, “machine learning” and to be honest I was kind of worried back then that perhaps this “machine” that could teach itself given some data would be able to write the software I was developing at the time. But it wasn’t until I saw the news about DeepMind’s algorithm that was able to play and win a set of old Atari video games (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-31623427), that I really started to take notice. That was the year I was doing my masters at university so I started to explore this exciting new topic, reading papers and finding stuff online. That interest turned into a passion when I started my PhD the next year.
