Off course! The AI world changes so quickly. My work changes so rapidly that I don’t even sometimes know in advance what I’ll be doing in a week. It’s hardly ever boring as you have so much to learn and keep up with ever changing technology.

Yes! A thousand times, yes! Especially right now. There’s an explosion of new research and systems coming out, particularly regarding large language models and generative AI (these are the current “flavours of the month”, anyway). There’s so much public interest at the moment, and in industry too. I’ve literally heard anecdotes about sales people and managers of companies approaching their tech staff and saying things like, “So, er, how can I sell AI? (That’s not the right question, by the way. You have to go deeper than that).

It’s fascinating reading the research papers (when they’re accessible) and seeing if any new ideas or algorithms could be adapted for my lab’s work. Developing proof-of-concept systems that demonstrate what a particular machine learning algorithm can achieve is also very fulfilling, especially when you can visualise and present the results and your manager says things like, “Ooo!” or “We could use that!” Like Rosemary said, it’s an every-changing technology, which makes it really exciting to be involved in, if a tad difficult sometimes, trying to keep up with the pace it’s currently moving at.
