That’s a very relevant question and one that is currently being debated. I think there is no reason why AI tools should not be used to help students learn. This is particularly relevant when you consider some students might be put off learning a topic or doing a piece of homework because doing the research, or finding the information, might be very difficult. This is especially so these days, what with the amount of information on the Web and how search results are presented to us. If an AI tool can help find the specific information a student needs to learn something, or can convey it in a way that a student can better understand, I’m all for its use in helping in education.

Yes! There are, of course challenges. But if the aim is faster and better learning that will enable you to get a job and achieve what you want to, then we have an obligation to find ways of using AI to benefit stutents so they are more likely to succeed.

I think it should, but only if it is done responsibly. Many generative AIs (like ChatGPT) have a problem of “hallucination”, which is the process of generating false or misleading information, and because these AIs often sound very confident, the reader can be misled. I’m working on a research project to develop an AI tool which is trained on textbooks, to assist students with their learning process. This would hopefully give a more trustworthy AI model. We believe that AI can serve as a personal tutor who is available 24/7, like someone who can paraphrase concepts and hold a conversation about topics to confirm your understanding.

AI technology is likely going to be everywhere, just like how we visit tens or hundreds of web pages every day. We can use the internet to aid our learning, but it can also hinder us if used incorrectly. I view AI technology in a similar light.

Well – it already is – the genie is out of the bottle. So we have to find ways in which this can be done in ethical and fair ways. (This is the problem with companies releasing advanced products on society as a test case, and seeing how we adapt.)

I believe AI can be a valuable aid for students in their learning, as long as it is used ethically and fairly.
