That’s a really hard question as you’re never quite sure how much impact your work will have. I did a lot of work around 20 years ago on helping scientists and others around the world develop nanotechnology safely, and I think I achieved a lot with that. Personally, I’m most proud of the two books that I’ve published … but I’m not sure enough people read them for them to count as a great achievement!

I’m really proud of the work I did in my PhD, which used machine learning (AI) and wearable sensors (sensors that people wore on their forearms) to determine what hand gestures people were trying to perform. I used this information to try to help upper limb prosthetic users try to control their devices more effectively.

I did some astronomy analysis to resolve a close pair of double stars. The technique was called interferometry. I published a paper on it. It needed a complicated bit of maths called Fourier Analysis.

During my PhD, I led a clinical trial where we gave out smart devices to monitor participants’ asthma. Even before the data was analysed, some people had already said the monitoring alone had helped them. Knowing that I had a direct positive impact on one person’s life is a great achievement for me. Hopefully, my dataset will continue to be researched and have a positive impact.
