• Question: Would Alexa understand a person who speaks a language from a tiny place that most people have never heard of? Would Alexa make any mistakes with this?

Alexa is designed to be multilingual however the number of languages supported are limited. English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, French, Arabic, Japanese and Hindi are some of the languages supported. Based on number of speakers worldwide these languages cover the top 10 most spoken and used languages. But, if we consider 7000 total languages spoken worldwide, Alexa’s skills are limited from that perspective. There are often challenges with the accent as well. However, the newer versions of Alexa would be able to deal with the accent challenges. The total number of languages covered (compared to the 7000 possible ) might continue to be limited.

A side note to this: I mentored a group of graduates at our company doing a project based on the Alexa. They were trying to identify whether a speech command came from an authentic human voice or had been generated synthetically or electronically, such as coming from someone on the television. In their research they encountered a number of datasets but the variety of voice dialects and accents was not that great. From this, I would infer that someone speaking an uncommon dialect or language is something Alexa could struggle with.
